Transferring files from desktop to laptop PC?
I am TRYING to transfer files from my desktop PC to my new laptop. My desktop is running XP my laptop Vista. I bought cat 5 cord and wasn’t sure where to attach it, I attached it to the back of my tower and that didn’t work. The other problem is that it appears that Vista doesn’t recognize this type of set up on it’s wizard. It only recognizes an easy connect cord or a USB drive. I know NOTHING about this sort of stuff other than how to turn it on and point and click. HELP!
If you are not familiar with configuring a network, then that is probably not the best way for you do it. While it is the fastest way, getting it working can be very involved.
A better way for you would probably be to use a USB flash drive or memory stick (different names for the same thing.) You plug it into the old computer, copy files to it until it is full, then plug it into the new computer and copy them off.
Remember that since you are copying from XP to Vista, you will be unable to copy any of the programs from the old computer to the new. You will have to reinstall all of them using the original CDs or downloads. (I know, it is a pain, but….)
You can copy things like your music, videos, pictures, and documents. You will probably want to place them in matching directories on the new computer (such as copying everything in “My Music” for the old computer to “My Music” on the new.
