Connecting an Apple Powerbook G4 laptop to a modem for Internet?

How do I connect my Powerbook G4 laptop with a modem to Internet? I tried to take the Ethernet cable from my PC to my laptop but not work no. (He says he already has an IP address to my PC). Oh! and please do not tell''pas''obtenir a router. Thank you!
