laptop for sale 2 laptop for sale
My dad bought an old laptop from yard sale for $5.00 but likes to use internet card. Can he use XP?

right now, it’s using windows 98, 4 gig hard drive, 96 megs of RAM. He bought it for $5.00. It is pentium 2 processor. He would need to upgrade 98 to 2000 or XP. Can he be able to do that? Or would it be better for him to buy a new laptop computer?

well he could only really update to 2000 me at the most because of the low ram but i have seen desktops running xp with 128 megabyte of ram but it was slow but i am not sure with 4 gigabytes of hard drive left ir could be possible but it would be very slow…so he might be able to but he would need to drastically remove a good bit of stuff.
well it says you can here are the requirements for xp pro.

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
Sound card
Speakers or headphones

For XP home Edition
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
Sound card
Speakers or headphones

so i was wrong but he can definantly use xp you can surf the internet for the appropiate software if you do not already have it but do not i repeat do not buy a bootlegged copy because it will not work

now if he wants to update to vista basic this is what he would need:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
512 MB of ram
20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
DVD-ROM drive
Audio Output
Internet access (fees may apply)
so he would need another ram card and he would have to delete a lot of stuff

Now for Melinium Edition (ME)
Processor – Pentium or equivalent, 150 MHz or higher
Memory – 32 mb of RAM
Hard Drive Space – 320 mb to 420 mb depending on configuration selected
Display – VGA or higher
Peripheral – Microsoft Mouse or compatible
Modem – Minimum supported 28.8 or higher baud rate.

so without a shout of a doubt he would be able to use ME but i myself with experiance do not like it
For 200 just plain out he would need
133 MHz or more Pentium microprocessor (or equivalent).

Windows 2000 Professional supports up to two processors on a single computer.
64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum. 32 MB of RAM is the minimum supported. 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM is the maximum.
A 2 GB hard disk that has 650 MB of free space. If you are installing over a network, more free hard disk space is required.
VGA or higher-resolution monitor.
Keyboard.
Mouse or compatible pointing device (optional).

I hope this helped in some way
